This film is not about lying. It is about who can speak, who is heard, and who is quietly erased.

Synopsis

Muhammed works for a funeral transport company in Berlin, moving bodies between Germany and Turkey. On a delivery trip to Istanbul, he discovers a small coffeehouse where men make a living as professional false witnesses in court. He tries it once. He goes back. Then again. As the cases grow bigger, a face he no longer recognizes stares back at him from the bathroom mirror each morning.

Burak Babayiğit is a Berlin-based filmmaker and director whose work explores visibility, identity, and the cost of being seen.

Oranges Are Not Aware of Sin grew out of a simple and disturbing observation: that consistent lies are not punished. Systems, legal, social, political, absorb them, reward them, depend on them. It is inconsistency that triggers consequences. This is not a Turkish story or a German story. It is a story about how power organises itself, everywhere.

The film's protagonist is a man nobody listens to. His journey into false witnessing is not a moral fall. It is the first time in his life that a room goes quiet when he speaks. That is what the film is really about: who gets to have a voice, who is heard, and what it costs.

Burak Babayiğit (Writer & Director) has been selected as a T-Port Talent to take part in the TalentBridge program at the 2026 SFC | Rendez-vous Industry led by Cinéma de Demain at the Cannes Film Festival, where he will be presenting his debut feature film in development, Oranges Are Not Aware of Sin. The program is co-funded by Creative Europe MEDIA and the German Federal Film Board (FFA).
